Hey there! I'm one of Beth's cycling partners and also a Doctor of Chinese Medicine as well as a nutritionist. I was also concerned about adrenal exhaustion, as well as potential iron depletion from the destruction of Red Blood Cells that occurs with muscle contraction, especially over a long period of time. Not to mention depletion of multiple other things, so with this thought in mind, I've not only told Beth what symptoms to watch for and let me know about (we talk every day) but also have prescribed several things (including something specific to adrenal rebuilding) that I've taken myself for super long-distance stuff. The upside is that Beth has a really good diet to begin with, and the whole food supplements are easily and readily absorbable, so I suspect that that's what helping her train so well without injury or exhaustion. Of course, when she comes back, there'll be a bunch of other stuff to take to help recover and regenerate! Yes, it ALWAYS takes a toll to take on something like this- the trick, in my opinion, is to be really aware of symptoms to look for, and to be talking to an expert so they can ask about things you might not have thought of symptom-wise. Then, to take the supplements prescribed. I personally don't think it's wise to do something like this and not be taking supplements - our bodies will wipe themselves out trying to keep up with the level of training and the ultimate competition.
